About the project

Seaside: Photographed is a major historical photography exhibition presented at the Turner Contemporary in Margate. The extensive show traced the complex relationship between photographers and the British coastline from the 1850s to the present day. As well as featuring the work of eminent photographers including Jane Bown, Henri Cartier Bresson, Vanley Burke, Anna Fox, Susan Hiller, Paul Nash, Martin Parr, and Ingrid Pollard, the curators have included a blend rich and often unknown work from across photography’s history, including Raymond Lawson’s remarkable chronicle of family life in Whitstable.

The exhibition explores the changing nature of the seaside, encompassing the 1950s/60s holiday camp heydays, the 1970s and 90s festival/rave scenes, traditional boarding houses, and personal social histories of British communities.

IWANT worked closely with the team at Turner Contemporary to create the identity, marketing and way finding for the exhibition.
