THEY DID PLAY RECORDS…
Many moons ago in my DJing days I ran, with some old friends, a great Sunday night on Essex Rd in Islington. The premise is an all too obvious one now but at the time the only night in London that was doing anything remotely similar was the Heavenly Social but we were much more diverse. We invited members of bands and anyone involved in music to come and play their record collection - anything goes. It began slowly but very quickly gained momentum with labels and artists calling up and asking to play, or for their artists to play. We had members of Happy Mondays, Simon Raymond of Cocteau Twins and now Bella Union, Bomb The Bass, Cornershop, Portishead, David Gedge, Bay City Rollers, James Lavelle and the list could go on and on. One new band that sticks with me was a young act called Simian who came and DJ’d a couple of times, loved it and went on to create their own mobile disco. Regulars at the bar and occasionally in the DJ booth were a new band called London Jelly who were chatting about starting a design agency called Airside, and another great designer Tom Hingston who I couldn’t quite pluck up the courage to ask for a job. Amusingly Sarah Cox was often propping up the bar with Jon Carter til late into the night (was funny to hear that she was missing from her Radio 1 job the next morning on several occasions after a good night). Notable spots at the bar were Kevin Shields drinking with J Mascis and a new band called the Strokes getting trashed when they came over to promote their first Rough Trade single before they blew up, they’d heard it was a good night. Ahhh good memories and it truly was the first of a kind, and it all happened for free, the night was free the bands/artists played for free, we didn’t get paid - I think the bar done pretty well mind you! So why this post… The Embassy changed hands years back and was never the same but I was truly saddened to drive past on Saturday to see it reduced to a Costa Coffee, progress hey? As part of the night we made the occasional mix we gave away - I spoke with Universal about a series of mixes or collections from the artists, they said it would never sell - late night tales anyone
anyhow this was the first mix - the date says 03 09 00 (really!?!) I think it still stands up
